THE ART HISTORY MAJOR
Students work closely with their advisers to develop individual
study plans that include a wide range of Lower College courses and
a minimum of two Upper College seminars. Standard divisional procedures
are followed for Moderation. Moderation boards consist of three
Bard faculty members, including the student’s advisor and
at least one other art historian. The choice of board members and
the scheduling of boards are the responsibility of each student
in conformance with the college calendar. Prospective majors need
to have four art history courses before moderating, among them at
least one 100-level course. Guidelines for moderation are available
from the secretary and faculty of Art History. Students should take
a variety of art history courses before focusing on the area of
their Senior Project research. They are required to take at least
one art history course each semester and to distribute those courses
over the range of art history offerings so as to maximize exposure
to different faculty and different approaches to the field.
*Specific requirements include one introductory course (100 level)
as foundation for upper level courses; methods (300 level, currently
offered as Art History and Biography: Modes of Interpretation) to
be taken during the junior year; one course outside the Western
curriculum, either in Art History or a related field; one course
covering art from before 1800; two art history seminars; and one
course in studio art. Please note that no one course can fulfill
more than one requirement. Students are also strongly encouraged
to take additional courses in studio arts, history of photography,
film, media, and electronic arts, integrated arts, literature, history,
religion, philosophy, and other areas (with particular emphasis
on courses that develop writing skills). Before undertaking the
Senior Project–a major thesis examining an original art historical
issue–the student should be able to demonstrate reading knowledge
of a language other than English.
*Requirements apply to class of 2006 and subsequent classes. It
is highly recommended that they be followed by classes of 2003-2005.
